Hands do not touch your precious Me

World premiere: the 30th of October 2020, Teatro Comunale di Ferrara (IT)

With Hands do not touch your precious Me, Wim Vandekeybus goes in search of an unspoken, ever-changing primal truth. For this new creation, he collaborates with the composer Charo Calvo, eight dancers and – for the first time – the performer and visual artist Olivier de Sagazan. Together they make living, fleshly sculptures hover between the utopian and the gruesome, the powerful and the fragile.

Vandekeybus draws inspiration from the work of the world’s first known author: the Sumerian princess and high priestess Enheduanna. In her poems and hymns, Enheduanna addresses the principal goddess Inanna – the divine personification of the paradoxes of human existence, and the complex array of possibilities in someone’s conscious inner life.

Time and time again in their work, both Vandekeybus and de Sagazan explore the boundaries of being ‘human’ and being ‘corporeal’. It was to this end that Vandekeybus developed his characteristic, impulsive movement idiom replete with contractions, conflict, risks, familiarity and vulnerability. De Sagazan has appeared all over the world with his mysterious ‘transfigurations’ for more than twenty years. Calvo – who has been involved with Ultima Vez since the beginning – bases her soundtrack on acoustic improvisations, movements and spoken text. The way in which de Sagazan designs his transfigurations using clay and paint, in combination with the physical texture of Calvo’s electroacoustic music, resonates with Ultima Vez’s movement language.
