FULL ------------------- Workshop Iñaki Azpillaga
About the workshop
Transmitting the Ultima Vez vocabulary is all about the specificity of the creation process and the physical, energetic movement Wim Vandekeybus’ performances are known for.
This workshop by Iñaki Azpillaga will be exploring themes from several Ultima Vez performances. Participants explore and confront Vandekeybus’ energetic vocabulary through floor work, partner and contact work and movement as a ‘theatrical act’ rather than as a 'technique'. Participants will get familiarised with concepts like risk, trust, moving with necessity, instinct, self-protection, speed, fragility, softness, weakness, tension…
About Iñaki Azpillaga's approach
Movement is the key tool of the workshop. The workshop is directed to dance amateurs with physical and/or sportive training willing to move with high doses of energy. Exercises around partnering and floor work will centre the attention of the studies. The participants are encouraged to appropriate and stage the given material in the shortest delay of time. We will enlarge our dance lexicon while we explore movements provoked by necessity, urgency, limitations and emotional inputs…. Changes between states of power and fragility will create rhythm of the proposed dance language.
Following an encounter with Wim Vandekeybus in the ‘90 Iñaki decides to join his company Ultima Vez in Brussels, where during three years he works as a performer in Vandekeybus' creations. Later he also got involved as a movement assistant for different performances. Currently he combines his work as an assistant with other pedagogical occupations: he teaches workshops and gives dance classes to professionals, teachers and different target groups.
The workshop is open to amateur dancers. For those who are curious to discover the universe of Ultima Vez. No specific precognition of dance techniques nor professional schooling required. Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez universe bases its work on mankind confrontation, creative imaginary and athletic dynamics. A fit physical condition is recommended.
Ultima Vez workshops are divided in two groups, beginners and advanced. Our level division is based on field experience and applied by all our teachers. In case of doubt or insecurities, please do not hesitate to get in contact with Aïda via firstname.lastname@example.org.
