FULL Workshop Rob Hayden
About the workshop
Transmitting the Ultima Vez language is all about the specificity of the creation process and the physical, energetic movement Wim Vandekeybus’ performances are known for. Drawing from his 8 years of experience working with Ultima Vez and based on over 20 years of performance research into dance, theatre, and music, Rob's workshop will propose physically demanding tasks that deal with elements of corporeal, psychological, and emotional risk. These tasks will inherently challenge various limitations, inviting the participants to go beyond them. The workshop is designed to unlock the flow of living impulses within the body. Once unlocked, our attention, intention and awareness guide our work naturally.
The primary and practical focal point throughout the workshop will be on the delicate meeting point between precision and organicity, awareness of space and one’s ability to react to its constituent elements and to improvise within a structure. The overriding emphasis is focusing on developing within oneself what can be called the ‘total act’; a state wherein the performer works toward creating his or her own ‘movement as a theatrical act’ rather than as a technique.
Born in the US, Rob Hayden was a nationally competitive gymnast for 13 years and in 1989 enrolled in the BFA curriculum for theatre and dance at the University of New Mexico. He has been a member of Wim Vandekeybus’ Ultima Vez for more than 15 years now and was part of the creations Blush, Sonic Boom, PUUR and Spiegel and the revivals of What the Body Does Not Remember and In Spite of Wishing and Wanting. Since 2009, he has been collaborating as director, choreographer, performer, and composer with various artists both in Belgium and abroad. His personal work combines over 20 years of performance, choreographic and theoretical research and experiences into dance, theatre, sound/music, voice and movement.
Applies to professionally active dancers and performers (circus artists, actors, ...) with a strong physical condition. The challenging and intensive workshop demands extended physicality needed to intensify the level of the dance and performing experience.
Ultima Vez workshop program is divided in two groups, beginners and advanced. Our level division is based on field experience and applied by all our teachers. In case of doubt or insecurities, please do not hesitate to get in contact with Aïda via firstname.lastname@example.org.
