What the Body Does Not Remember - Revival coming in 2026

In 1987, Wim Vandekeybus created What the Body Does Not Remember with his newly founded company Ultima Vez. Not immediately labelled as dance, the piece redefined the field and earned the prestigious Bessie Award in New York for its “brutal confrontation of dance and music.”

Twenty-five years later, in 2013, a new generation of performers brought the work back on tour, this time accompanied live by the musicians of Ictus. In 2026, the groundbreaking production returns once more - reinvented in a live music edition in collaboration with the world-renowned Ensemble Intercontemporain, and premiering on 17/06/26 at Philharmonie de Paris. This revival does not simply revisit the past: it expands it, with 17 minutes of new music composed by Thierry De Mey and a newly choreographed scene that deepens the work’s legacy of risk, instinct, and survival.

"Tough, brutal, playful, ironic and terrific. Adjectives seem unduly passive in describing What the Body Does Not Remember, an extraordinarily innovative dance piece."— Anna Kisselgof in The New York Times, November 22nd, 1987
