Hear the Silence explores the need for embrace in times of disruption. The starting point is the waltz, once a symbol of European refinement as a music and a dance, but in the 20th century shaken by underlying tensions.Seven dancers and a musician revisit the waltz and deconstruct the dance form.In search of collective resilience through a reconstruction with old debris, new compositions and parallels with the present emerge.Hear the Silence is a contemporary plea for dance and music as a form of resistance and connection in uncertain times.
Zoë Demoustier is a Brussels-based choreographer and performer with a background in contemporary dance, Dutch mime, and cultural research. Her artistic practice begins with the body as a visual medium, weaving movement with socially and politically engaged themes. She creates choreographic work that embraces diverse bodies and perspectives.
Since graduating in 2018 from the Academy for Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam (Mime, Physical Theatre) and the Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema, and Sound in Brussels (Directing), Zoë has developed a wide-reaching network across Flanders, Brussels, and the Netherlands, and has worked internationally in cities such as Vienna, Montreal, and Milan.
She has collaborated with a broad range of artists and companies, including Kabinet K, Alma Söderberg/Manyone, Michiel Vandevelde, Iris Bouche/Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, David Weber-Krebs, and Marcelo Evelin.
Her notable performances include:
Unfolding an Archive (Ultima Vez/STUK)
Beating Choir / Choeur Battant (BRONKS BE & Le Carrousel CA)
Nesten and Wat Was & Wat Nu (fABULEUS)
The critically acclaimed What Remains (Ultima Vez), selected for the 2023 TheaterFestival and recognized internationally.
Zoë is co-founder of Platform In De Maak, an artist-run initiative with Oihana Azpillaga and Barbara T’Jonck, creating space for emerging stage makers. In 2021, she was ambassador for Dag van de Dans, leading to the online documentary Dansmakers van Morgen, which highlighted new voices in the dance landscape.
In 2022, she began a new collaboration as choreographer at Ultima Vez, as part of a structural residency program with Ultima Vez, LAB Hasselt, and 30CC Leuven. She is also affiliated as a researcher at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and as a lecturer at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam and De Kunsthumaniora in Brussels.
Currently, she is conducting a two-year research project titled The Flemish Wave Revisited: Towards an Intergenerational Dialogue with Dance Heritage and is developing two upcoming performances: Hear the Silence (laGeste, Ultima Vez, KVS) and The Wave, premiering in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
