In Her Body Doesn't Her Soul Wim Vandekeybus deepens the influence of film in his stage work. For the first time, a short film is an integral part of the production. Elba and Federico is about a couple - Dirk Roofthooft and Vivian Cruz - who share an apartment, but don't really live together. He works at night, she during the day. They sleep on the same side of the bed: he during the day, she during the night. She dreams, he doesn't. They think about each other continually, but they're hardly ever together. Desire has become more important than its satisfaction: it speeds up the time they wait for each other, it slows down the moments they spend together.

The film is like a red wire through the performance, introducing most of its central themes. Day and night, darkness and light, seeing and not seeing, concepts that literally come to life in the presence of two blind performers. Saïd Gharbi and Machtelt Philips move among and with the other dancers, but they do without any visual security. They run and jump through the space, but they only feel or hear if there's any dangers surrounding them. The imaginary catastrophe, small details suggesting big failures, they're are no longer empty abstractions here.
