In 2002 dancer and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was invited by the Festival d'Avignon. In the frame of a project called Le vif du Sujet a dancer is invited to create a 30-minute performance with a choreographer of their choice. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui chose to work with Wim Vandekeybus.
Departure point of IT was The Circular Valley, a short story by Paul Bowles about the Atlájala, a ghost living in a abandonned monastery capable of taking on different forms.Accompanied on stage by a talking donkey, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui squirmed over the dance floor, moving like a snake onto a pillar and sitting motionless on top of this high perch for minutes.
Originally an open-air performance, it was later reworked as a 50-minute full-evening performance, including film images shot by Wim Vandekeybus.
